The Biden administration cautioned Iran, stating that the U.S. would be unable to restrain Israel from responding forcefully if Iran launched another attack. This warning follows Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s statement promising “a crushing response” to actions against Iran and its allies.
A U.S. official told Axios News: “We told the Iranians: We won’t be able to hold Israel back, and we won’t be able to make sure that the next attack will be calibrated and targeted as the previous one.”
On October 1, Iran launched a missile strike on Israel, reportedly in retaliation for Israeli assassinations of key figures in groups allied with Iran, such as Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel responded by targeting Iranian military sites, though it avoided striking oil or nuclear facilities.
In preparation for potential escalation, the U.S. has increased its military presence in the region. This includes deploying B-52 bombers, destroyers, and missile defense systems to bolster deterrence against Iran and protect U.S. allies. In parallel, Israeli intelligence has heightened security at sensitive sites, and is reportedly monitoring Iran’s military movements and preparations for a possible counterattack.
Adding to the tension, Iranian officials hinted at a possible shift in Iran’s nuclear policy if the country faces what it considers an “existential threat.” While Iran currently adheres to a religious decree prohibiting nuclear weapons, Iranian leaders suggested this stance could change under severe threat conditions.
With the U.S. presidential election days away, both American and Israeli forces are on high alert for any signs of an Iranian strike, as conflicting reports suggest Iran may delay or proceed with retaliation.
