The U.S. Special Operations Command is currently looking to acquire a new Extreme Long Range-Sniper Rifle (ELR-SR) to enhance its capabilities against potential adversaries. The initiative aims to equip U.S. special operations forces with the longest-range sniper rifle ever fielded by the military, capable of precise fire at a range of up to 2,500 meters, or roughly a mile-and-a-half. The ELR-SR is envisioned as a modular, magazine-fed system adaptable to multiple calibers, designed to replace the Barrett M107 .50 caliber sniper rifle and the Mk 15 sniper rifle primarily used by Navy SEALs.
The ELR-SR will feature a variety of advanced specifications to meet the demanding requirements of special operations. It will include barrel configurations for each caliber, magazines, a sound suppressor, a ballistic computer, and a quick-change kit capable of switching calibers within five minutes. The rifle’s overall length will not exceed 56 inches, with a weight limit of 22 pounds. It is also designed to minimize recoil and be manually operated as a bolt-action gun.
