The Ukrainian Special Operations Forces (SSO), operating under the 73rd Maritime Center, have reported a successful strike against a Russian 152-mm self-propelled gun, known as Hyacinth-S or 2S5. This artillery piece was engaged and destroyed using the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) provided by the United States.
The operation occurred in the southern frontline regions where the Russian gun had been active against Ukrainian forces. The SSO conducted reconnaissance operations that identified the enemy artillery’s position. After acquiring and verifying the coordinates, they were relayed to a nearby Ukrainian Defense Forces artillery unit that executed the strike.
The video evidence released on Telegram by the Ukrainian forces shows the destruction of the artillery piece, although the quality of the footage made it difficult to confirm the exact model of the equipment destroyed. Independent verification of the video’s date and location has not been confirmed, as reported by the Kyiv Post.
The Hyacinth-S is designed primarily for counter-battery fire, capable of destroying enemy firing points, field fortifications, and armored artillery. The gun has a high initial velocity muzzle brake that allows for a maximum firing range of up to 27,000 meters with standard ammunition and up to 40,000 meters with active-reactive projectiles. It is also compatible with a range of specialized 152mm ammunition.
