Ukrainian drones struck a Russian naval base in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, marking the first known Ukrainian attack on the region. According to reports, the recent strike targeted a strategic location that reportedly supports Iran-Russia supply routes, a vital link for military resources. The attack led to temporary suspension of nearby Makhachkala airport operations, reflecting heightened security concerns in the region.
The target, located about 1,000 kilometers from the frontlines reportedly serves as a base for Russia’s Caspian Flotilla, which includes vessels that have launched missiles into Ukraine. Wednesday’s attack, which reportedly involved Ukrainian A-22 “Flying Fox” drones, led to explosions near missile ships and naval facilities, though the extent of the damage is disputed.
According to Ukrainian sources, at least two vessels—Tatarstan and Dagestan—were damaged, along with possible impact to other small ships. However, Russian officials assert that all drones were intercepted, denying any significant damage to their fleet.
Sergei Melikov, Dagestan’s regional leader said Russian defenses shot down a drone over the Caspian Sea, but videos online show at least one drone reaching the naval port and detonating.
This morning, Ukrainian attack drones successfully struck Russia’s Caspian Sea flotilla in the port of Kaspiysk, over 1000 km behind the frontline.
