Ukraine’s recent drone strike on the Kushchyovskaya airbase in Russia signifies an effort to neutralize the threat posed by Russian glide bombs. Western intelligence sources suggest that the attack is part of Kyiv’s strategy to limit the impact of these advanced munitions, which have been problematic for Ukrainian forces due to their ability to evade traditional air defenses.
Glide bombs, equipped with flight control surfaces, are released by Russian aircraft from distances outside the reach of Ukraine’s air defenses. Their effectiveness stems from their short flight times, small radar signatures, and non-ballistic trajectories, making them challenging to intercept.
The attack, which took place on Saturday, targeted not only the airbase but also two oil refineries in southwest Russia, far from the frontline. According to the Kyiv Independent, this marks another instance in Ukraine’s series of long-range strikes aimed at Russian military and energy infrastructure. The Kushchyovskaya base hosts Russian Su-34 and Su-35 fighter jets, which are frequently used to launch glide bombs against Ukrainian frontline positions.
Ukrainian strikes on Krasnodar Krai partially affected Russian aerial bombardment storage — at the airbase in the town of Kushchyovskaya, Krasnodar Krai, a UMPK warehouse was destroyed.

Britain’s Defense Ministry reported that the strike resulted in the destruction of multiple glide-bomb kits stored at the airfield, though it was not confirmed whether any aircraft were damaged.
The successful attack is expected to prompt Russia to disperse its fighter jets and reallocate air-defense assets to cover vulnerabilities.
This is not the first time Ukrainian forces have targeted Russian airbases; a similar drone attack was carried out in early April on the Morozovsk airbase in Rostov. While the full extent of the damage from these strikes remains somewhat unclear, they underscore Ukraine’s intent to preemptively diminish the glide bomb threat.
