On Sunday, Ukrainian F-16 fighter jets successfully intercepted more than 10 Russian aerial targets during one of the largest missile and drone attacks on the country in months. The operation marked the first combat use of the recently delivered F-16s. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the intercepts, though he did not provide an exact number.
The Russian assault involved over 120 missiles and 90 drones, targeting infrastructure across multiple regions, including Rivne, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Volyn, and Odesa. Ukrainian air defense forces reported intercepting over 140 aerial threats, with the F-16s playing a key role in preventing additional damage.
Video footage circulating online showed an F-16 attempting to intercept a Russian cruise missile near Ivano-Frankivsk, underscoring the operational significance of these advanced jets in protecting Ukrainian airspace.

The F-16 fighter jets provide Ukraine with enhanced air defense capabilities against a wide range of aerial threats, including high-speed cruise missiles and drones. Equipped with advanced radars like the AN/APG-68 and weapons such as AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, the F-16s can detect and engage fast-moving targets at extended ranges.
These jets are also outfitted with electronic warfare systems, including the ALQ-131 and ALR-69, which enhance survivability by jamming enemy radar and disrupting missile guidance. While effective, the F-16s are part of a broader defense strategy that includes NASAMS and Patriot missile systems, creating a layered defense network.
