Two American technology firms, IronNet and Asterion Systems, have introduced the Hitchhiker counter-drone platform in Ukraine to evaluate its effectiveness in real combat. The system, tested on the front lines, aims to neutralize enemy drones, such as Iranian-made Shahed UAVs, used by Russian forces. Ukrainian officials, after reviewing the technology, have expressed significant interest in adopting it.
The Hitchhiker drone combines Asterion’s counter-UAS capabilities with IronNet’s advanced cybersecurity systems. It is designed to detect, classify, and track aerial threats before neutralizing them. The all-electric propulsion system reduces maintenance costs and provides an efficient alternative to traditional missile-based air defense systems like the Patriot.

IronNet’s “Iron Dome” cybersecurity solution protects the drone network from cyberattacks, which often precede UAV strikes.
The Hitchhiker drone has been tested under active battlefield conditions, where UAVs are increasingly critical. It provides real-time intelligence and defense against drones, which Russia frequently employs to strike Ukrainian infrastructure.
Admiral Mike Hewitt, a director at IronNet, described the system as capable of “complete coverage” of national airspace, with rapid deployment to intercept threats. Ukrainian frontline commanders have praised its potential, urging swift delivery of the system for operational use.
