The U.S. Navy announced on Monday that it had relieved Cmdr. Cameron Yaste, the commanding officer of the USS John S. McCain, due to a “loss of confidence” in his ability to lead. Yaste, who took command of the guided-missile destroyer in October 2023, was overseeing its current deployment in the Gulf of Oman as part of the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group. The Navy did not provide specific reasons for Yaste’s removal but emphasized that its leaders are held to high standards and accountable when those standards are not met.
Yaste’s dismissal follows an incident earlier in the year that garnered significant attention on social media. In a now-deleted photo shared by the Navy on social media, Yaste was pictured firing a M-4 rifle with its Trijicon VCOG scope mounted backward during a live-fire exercise. The image was widely mocked by both veterans and civilians online. The Marine Corps also took a lighthearted jab at the Navy by posting a photo with the caption, “Clear Sight Picture,” referencing the proper use of the rifle scope.
Remember this guy? He just got fired.

Despite the attention the incident received, the Navy has not explicitly stated whether it played a role in Yaste’s removal. Yaste has been temporarily replaced by Capt. Allison Christy, deputy commodore of Destroyer Squadron 21. The change in leadership is not expected to impact the USS John S. McCain’s mission in the Middle East, where it continues to provide protection for the USS Theodore Roosevelt amid regional tensions.
