Iran has threatened severe retaliation against Israel for Haniyeh’s killing, with fears that Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia based in Lebanon, could be involved. This has raised the specter of a broader conflict that could engulf the region. The U.S., UK, Australia, and several other countries have advised their nationals to leave Lebanon as soon as possible.
Recent violence has mostly been confined to border areas, but Hezbollah has vowed to respond to the assassination of its commander, Fuad Shukr, intensifying fears of escalation. Over the weekend, Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel, prompting retaliatory airstrikes from the Israeli air force.
In light of these developments, the UK is also bolstering its consular and military presence in the region to assist with potential evacuations. Other countries, including France and Germany, have similarly suspended flights to Lebanon due to security concerns.
