The U.S. Coast Guard cutter, USCGC Glen Harris, seized approximately 1,700 pounds of methamphetamines in the Arabian Sea last week. Operating under the Canadian-led Combined Task Force (CTF) 150 of the Combined Maritime Forces, the seizure was executed on March 5 aboard a dhow. The narcotics were documented, weighed, and subsequently disposed of by the authorities.
CTF 150’s mission is critical in deterring and disrupting the activities of non-state actors involved in the illegal transport of weapons, drugs, and other illicit substances across strategic maritime corridors, including the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Oman.Â
The USCGC Glen Harris, a Sentinel-class fast response cutter, is currently deployed to Bahrain and contributes to Patrol Forces Southwest Asia (PATFORSWA). This contingent of U.S. Coast Guard ships operates in conjunction with U.S. and regional naval forces to enhance maritime security and counter illicit maritime activities in the Middle East.
Canadian Navy Capt. Colin Matthews, Commander of CTF 150, expressed pride in the successful operation, highlighting its importance in preventing the drugs from reaching their final destination. This seizure not only represents a tangible success in the fight against international drug trafficking but also illustrates the strategic importance of maritime security operations in curtailing the activities of illicit networks operating in these waters.
