The U.S. Army has decided to extend temporary promotions for enlisted troops who have not completed their professional military education (PME), as per a policy memo signed by Army G-1 Lt. Gen. Douglas Stitt. This reversal comes after a September memo that initially planned to end these temporary promotions for active-duty troops on January 1. Now, eligible troops will receive promotions and have 365 days to complete their required educational milestones. The temporary promotions were introduced in late 2021 to address issues with Master Leader Course slots and excessive waits for pre-promotion training, but the reason for extending them again remains unclear. This decision may impact the Army’s long-delayed “selection, training, education, and promotion” (STEP) vision for enlisted talent management, which is currently suspended.
