In a remarkable naval encounter during World War II, the USS Borie, a Navy destroyer, attempted to ram a German U-boat on November 1, 1943. However, turbulent waters in the North Atlantic caused the Borie to land on top of the U-boat’s deck at a 30-degree angle, leading to an intense hourlong engagement. The battle involved persistent gunfire, bizarre confrontations, and even a collision attempt by the U-boat. Ultimately, the Borie prevailed, forcing the German submarine to surrender, but the destroyer was heavily damaged and had to be scuttled. The crew’s valiant efforts were recognized with honors, including Navy Crosses and a Presidential Unit Citation.
