The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported a cyber operation by Russian actors aimed at influencing public perception regarding the situation in Avdiivka. This operation’s objective was to instigate panic within Ukraine and undermine the morale of its forces. On February 18, the State Special Communication Service of Ukraine identified breaches in several Ukrainian media outlets, including Ukrainska Pravda, Apostrophe, Liga.net, and Telegraf. These breaches resulted in the unauthorized publication of disinformation on their social media platforms, falsely asserting the widespread defeat of Ukrainian forces in Avdiivka.
Furthermore, on February 19, the Russian Ministry of Defense made claims staging the Ukraine withdrawal of Avdiivka and chaotic and unplanned. These statements are believed to be designed to sow discord and mistrust towards the Ukrainian military command. The claims were then amplified across Russian state-media platforms and military bloggers.Â
The ISW Report further stated that the tempo of Russian offensive operations near Avdiivka reportedly decreased after the Russian seizure of the area. Dmytro Lykhoviy, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Tavriisk Group of Forces, noted on February 19 a significant reduction in Russian attacks and mentioned that Russian forces were regrouping and conducting clearing operations in Avdiivka. Additionally, there was a notable decrease in Russian shelling and aviation activities in the region.
Ukrainian officials have stated that their forces have repositioned to a previously prepared and fortified new line of defense, anticipating a potential operational pause by Russian forces before they could resume significant offensive operations in the Avdiivka direction. Such a pause would likely necessitate the transfer of additional Russian reinforcements from other sectors, though there have been no indications of such movements by Russian command.
