The Ukrainian military has intensified operations in Kursk Oblast over the past several days. According to the General Staff, nearly 100 Russian ground assaults were repelled on Monday.
This renewed offensive comes five months after Ukraine launched a large-scale operation in the area, capturing approximately 1,300 square kilometers of territory in August 2024 before Russian forces, reinforced by North Korean troops, regained roughly half of the lost ground.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that over 38,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the Kursk region since the start of the offensive. Of these, about 15,000 are considered irrecoverable losses.
The recent offensive comes as Ukraine works to strengthen ties with international partners ahead of the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Zelenskyy and his administration have sought to secure continued military and diplomatic support, emphasizing the need to contain Russia’s aggression.
