Florida is experiencing a historic tornado outbreak as Hurricane Milton approaches, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing 90 tornado warnings across the state, surpassing all previous records. At least 11 confirmed tornadoes have been reported as of Wednesday morning, with the situation still evolving. Several of these tornado warnings have been classified as “particularly dangerous situations,” signaling the extreme threat to life and property.
The unprecedented wave of tornado warnings has already eclipsed the previous state record set during Hurricane Irma in 2017, when 69 warnings were issued in a single day. The NWS in Miami has also issued a tornado watch covering vast areas of south and west-central Florida, including major cities such as Miami, Tampa, and Sarasota, as well as the Florida Keys. This watch will remain in effect until 9 p.m. ET.
Numerous tornadoes have been spotted across the state, with some growing in size as they moved across southern Florida. One tornado was reported crossing the I-75 highway, and residents in the affected areas have been urged to seek shelter immediately. Videos and photos shared on social media depict the destruction left in the wake of these twisters.
As Hurricane Milton intensifies, the NWS warns of more extreme weather to come. Alongside the tornadoes, isolated hail and wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph have been forecasted. Around 12.6 million people, 2,424 schools, and 170 hospitals are currently in areas exposed to these dangerous conditions.
Hurricane Milton, expected to make landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday, is projected to bring a storm surge of up to 15 feet along Florida’s coast. This could exacerbate the already dire situation in the state, which is still recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Helene just weeks ago.
Residents are being urged to stay updated on weather alerts and take immediate action to protect themselves as Florida braces for what could be one of the most significant storms in its history.
