Poland has signed a $735 million contract with the United States for the supply of JASSM-ER long-range cruise missiles, Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on Tuesday. This agreement, finalized on May 28, 2024, marks a significant step in Poland’s ongoing efforts to bolster its military capabilities in response to the heightened security threats posed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The deal includes the delivery of several hundred missiles over a period from 2026 to 2030, enhancing the offensive reach of Poland’s F-16 fighter jets.
In addition to the JASSM-ER contract, Poland has also signed a $960 million agreement with the United States for an airspace reconnaissance system to monitor its northeastern borders. This system, featuring aerostat-based early warning radar, will be integrated with the newly acquired missiles to create a comprehensive defense network. The reconnaissance system aims to detect threats at a long range, allowing the JASSM-ER missiles, with their 1,000-kilometer range, to effectively neutralize targets far from the front lines.
Poland’s defense spending has surged to around 4% of its gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024, reflecting its commitment to military modernization amid regional tensions. This substantial investment includes not only missile systems but also the acquisition of advanced F-35 combat jets and participation in international defense initiatives like the Sky Shield Initiative, a pan-European air defense system. These measures are part of a broader strategy to enhance Poland’s deterrence and defense capabilities, particularly along its borders with Russia and Belarus.
