A Palestinian migrant identified as Omar Shehada, who is listed on a terror watchlist for alleged previous use of explosives and firearms, was apprehended at the U.S. southern border in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, on Monday. This revelation, first reported by the New York Post, has sparked concerns among U.S. lawmakers regarding the potential security risks associated with illegal border crossings.
Shehada’s arrest is part of a broader pattern of suspected terrorists being detained at the U.S.-Mexico border. In July, three other Palestinian nationals and one Turkish national with alleged ties to terrorism were similarly apprehended after illegally crossing into the United States. These incidents have prompted the House Committee on Homeland Security to demand answers from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and FBI Director Christopher Wray.

In a letter sent Tuesday, Rep. Mark E. Green (R-Tenn.), chair of the House Committee on Homeland Security, alongside other committee leaders, expressed alarm over these developments. The letter cited the detention of these individuals as part of a “persistent trend” of potential terrorists exploiting vulnerabilities at the U.S. border. The congressmen referenced other cases, including the arrest of eight Tajik nationals with ties to ISIS who were apprehended after crossing the border earlier this year.
The letter also noted the ongoing concern about “lone wolf” terrorists and criticized the current administration’s border policies, claiming they fail to adequately protect U.S. national security.
Shehada’s arrest comes just weeks after the capture of the three other Palestinian nationals at the California border, one of whom reportedly had “salacious photos” on their phone, including an image of a masked man holding an AK-47 rifle.
