Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine over two years ago, various independent analyses have documented significant casualties among Russian military personnel. The documented number of confirmed Russian military deaths stands at 50,471, based on tracking systems that include open sources and official records.
Further investigations suggest that the actual number might be as high as 85,000, based on the volume of inheritance settlements recorded for deceased soldiers. This figure contrasts sharply with the fewer than 6,000 deaths officially acknowledged by Russia seven months into the conflict.
The conflict has been marked by intense and prolonged fighting, with reports indicating the use of heavy assault tactics, which have contributed to a high rate of casualties. The second year of the conflict saw a 25% increase in fatalities compared to the first year, a steep rise in the death toll as the conflict progressed.
These figures are supported by broader estimates that place the total Russian casualties — including both killed and wounded — significantly higher.Â
The high number of fatalities is further compounded by significant losses in military hardware, with thousands of tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery units reported lost in the conflict.
