The USS John L. Canley, the Navy’s newest expeditionary sea base, is set to be commissioned in a ceremony on February 17 at Naval Base Coronado’s Naval Air Station North Island. This ship is dedicated to honoring Sgt. Maj. John L. Canley, a distinguished Medal of Honor recipient for his exceptional bravery during the Vietnam War’s Battle of Huế in 1968. Sgt. Maj. Canley risked his life to rescue wounded Marines amidst intense combat, earning him the distinction of becoming the first living Black Marine to receive the Medal of Honor in 2018. The USS John L. Canley will become part of the Navy’s Forward Deployed Naval Force in Saipan and represents the fourth vessel in the Lewis B. Puller-class expeditionary sea base.
