An earthquake with a magnitude of around 7.2 to 7.5 hit off the northeastern coast of Taiwan, shaking buildings and causing noticeable tremors in Taipei, the capital. Following the quake, reports emerged of several buildings collapsing. Videos from Hualien show the extent of the destruction. In response to the quake, a tsunami warning was issued for Taiwan’s east coast and the Japanese Okinawa Islands. The warning came into effect at around 21:00 EST.
