North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has directed the mass production of suicide drones following a test demonstration, according to state media reports on Friday.
During a visit to the Unmanned Aerial Technology Complex, Kim observed tests where drones destroyed cars and tanks. He reportedly highlighted their potential for diverse military applications and stressed the need to update military strategies to align with the evolving battlefield. The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) described the drones as capable of striking targets accurately while flying predetermined routes.

North Korea’s investment in drones aligns with Kim’s broader strategy to modernize its military through cost-effective innovations. These loitering munitions—also known as suicide drones—have become prominent in global conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and the Middle East.
This development also coincides with deepening ties between North Korea and Russia. Intelligence suggests potential collaboration in drone technology, with North Korea providing support to Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine in exchange for technological assistance. Reports indicate that as many as 13,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to Russia, and a defense pact was recently ratified between the two nations.
