Israeli defense forces carried out a series of airstrikes in the Wadi Saluki area of south Lebanon, aiming at Hezbollah targets. This operation led to the death of several Hezbollah operatives, including Ali Muhammad al-Dabas, a senior Radwan commander who orchestrated the Megiddo terrorist attack that had a profound impact on Israel in March 2023. The strike also claimed the life of his deputy, Hassan Ibrahim Issa, alongside other lower-ranking members.
The marked escalation stems from a series of attacks on the IDF Northern Command by Hezbollah, which resulted in casualties and injuries among Israeli soldiers. In retaliation, Israel expanded its military actions, striking multiple Hezbollah sites and infrastructure across southern Lebanon.Â
Amidst these tensions, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized Israel’s preparedness for war while expressing a preference for peace. He highlighted the IDF’s capabilities to strike at significant distances, including Beirut, if necessary. Gallant’s statements reflect Israel’s broader strategic posture aimed at deterring Hezbollah and securing the northern border by pushing Hezbollah forces back to the Litani River.
Hezbollah’s response to the Israeli strikes included launching rockets into northern Israeli communities, although without causing injuries. The group vowed retaliation for the deaths of civilians, including children, in previous Israeli attacks.
The international community, including the United Nations, has expressed concern over the escalating conflict, urging restraint and a halt to the violence.
