Israeli officials are reportedly preparing a significant military response to Iran’s massive missile attack on Israel, with possible targets including Iranian oil production facilities and military bases. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Iran would “pay for it,” as Israeli leaders discuss a range of options for retaliation.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned Iran of severe consequences, stating that Tehran would “pay a heavy price” for the attack, which occurred on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. “The regime in Iran does not understand our determination to defend ourselves,” Netanyahu said. “They will understand. Whoever attacks us, we will attack them.” Israeli officials indicated that the response will be much larger than the limited strikes seen after Iran’s previous missile and drone attacks earlier this year.
Several Israeli officials reportedly pointed to Iran’s oil facilities as desired targets. Some have also suggested that targeted assassinations or strikes on Iran’s air defense systems could be part of the operation.
According to the New York Times citing Israeli officials, Tel Aviv has not yet decided how to respond to Iran’s missile attack. The scope of the retaliation will depend on the level of practical and rhetorical support from the United States. The nature of the response may not be determined until after the Jewish New Year holiday, which ends on Friday evening. They noted that Israel was not currently planning to strike Iran’s Nuclear Facilities.
President Biden also said Wednesday that he would not support an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear sites in response to Tuesday’s missile attack.
Iran has warned of further escalation if Israel retaliates. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian threatened a “far more crushing response” if Israel strikes. Despite the rhetoric, Israeli officials have reiterated that their military action will be decisive.
