On April 5th, in Gaza, Palestine, an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) operation led to the tragic deaths of seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen (WCK). This incident occurred after a series of strikes on vehicles believed to be associated with the aid convoy. Initial reports from Haaretz detail how, after the first and second vehicles in the convoy were struck by missiles, a third vehicle attempting to evacuate the wounded was hit.
The IDF’s investigation into the incident revealed a chain of misidentifications and command errors. Despite the convoy being on a preapproved route and having made efforts to communicate its status after coming under fire, it was mistakenly targeted again. The strikes involved the use of an Elbit Hermes 450 drone, which acted on incorrect intelligence suggesting the presence of Hamas operatives within the aid convoy.
The IDF has dismissed two officers directly involved in the operation—a brigade support commander and a brigade commander—while also issuing reprimands to other military personnel for their roles in the oversight. Additionally, measures are being proposed to improve identification and coordination for aid vehicles, including the introduction of thermal-visible stickers and opening a new border crossing to facilitate aid delivery.
