In an effort to dismantle the operations of the Red Command, one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest organized crime groups, Brazilian police launched a substantial early morning raid. The operation targeted the Complexo do Alemão area, a northern sector of the city known to serve as a stronghold for the cartel, often described as a “bunker” by authorities.

The crackdown involved at least 350 officers, including specialized elite troops from the military police. The operation was supported by helicopters, armored vehicles, and heavy weaponry. As the operation unfolded, residents reported seeing large plumes of black smoke rising above the cityscape, and the sounds of gunfire echoed through the streets, creating a scene comparable to a warzone.
While specific details on casualties from the operation have not been disclosed, previous raids targeting this cartel have resulted in numerous deaths, including innocent bystanders hit by stray bullets.
