January 12 – The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) executed a precise operation against the elite Nukhba forces of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This operation, which took place within 24 hours prior to the announcement on January 12th, led to the elimination of a Nukhba commander during an IDF airstrike. This commander was involved in the October 7 incident and was targeted at a Hamas military compound in Khan Yunis.
In parallel, IDF ground forces engaged and neutralized three armed individuals as they exited a Hamas compound in Khan Yunis. Nearby, a weapons storage facility containing AK-47 rifles and RPG launchers was located and destroyed.
A significant discovery during the operation was an extensive underground tunnel network beneath Khan Yunis. Unearthed by the IDF’s Commando Unit and Yahalom Combat Engineering Unit, the tunnel featured advanced infrastructure such as ventilation, electrical systems, and plumbing. It was confirmed that Israeli hostages were held in this complex.
The IDF’s 98th Division is actively involved in both urban and subterranean warfare tactics as part of this campaign. The division’s focus is on identifying and dismantling Hamas’s underground tunnel networks, employing advanced technologies and coordinated efforts of engineering units, the Yahalom Unit, and special forces.
