Ukrainian forces carried out a successful artillery strike using U.S.-supplied HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) to target a Russian training facility located in the Petrovskiy district of Donetsk, approximately 15 miles from the front line. The attack resulted in at least a dozen Russian casualties. Reports indicate that Ukrainian forces have targeted the same area at least twice before since February 2024. In those earlier strikes, an estimated 100 Russian personnel were killed.
This pattern of Ukrainian strikes on Russian troop gatherings in open areas has persisted throughout the conflict. The rockets are often armed with cluster munitions such as the GMLRS M30A1 DPICM. These rockets are packed with grenade-sized submunitions that disperse over a wide area, inflicting significant damage on concentrated enemy forces. The Institute for the Study of War in Washington, D.C., has suggested that these recurring incidents point to a “callous disregard” for the lives of Russian soldiers by their commanders.
