Newly released footage from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office shows the dramatic moment a Special Operations Unit sniper shot and killed a bank robber during a hostage situation in Fort Myers, Florida. The incident occurred on February 6, when 36-year-old Sterling Ramon Alavache attempted to rob a Bank of America and took two people hostage.

The video, made public on June 8, captures the moments as Alavache, armed with a knife and claiming to have a bomb, held a female hostage at knifepoint. The footage shows SWAT officers positioning themselves outside the bank, with a sniper using another officer’s shoulder to steady his aim.
Despite the efforts of a negotiator to de-escalate the situation, Alavache became increasingly aggressive, placing one hostage in a headlock. As the situation deteriorated, the sniper took a shot through a desktop computer monitor, striking Alavache in the forehead and killing him instantly. The bullet traveled between the two hostages, leaving them unharmed.
Lt. Todd Olmer of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office explained that such precise shooting positions are regularly trained for time-critical incidents. The .308-caliber bullet used was chosen for its reliability in penetrating barriers.
Sheriff Carmine Marceno praised the SWAT team’s performance, stating, “How you train is how you perform, and this is exactly what we train for.”
