The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) successfully identified the remains of 2nd Lt. Fred Brewer, a Tuskegee Airman, after a decade of investigative work. This mission reflects the U.S. military’s commitment to repatriating service members from past conflicts, with around 81,000 still unaccounted for from wars including WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam. Brewer’s identification was a complex process involving detective work, diplomacy, and cross-referencing historical records and aircraft wreckage data.
DPAA Research Analyst Josh Frank played a pivotal role in identifying Brewer’s remains, initially interred as X-125 in Italy. The investigation combined meticulous record analysis, engaging with WWII veterans, and leveraging information from Italian enthusiasts.
