A 90-year-old disabled Air Force veteran from New Hampshire has received an outpouring of support after a TikTok video revealed his struggles to afford rent and care for his wife with dementia. The video, posted by TikTok user Jenelle Marie, showed the veteran, identified only as Donald, attempting to pawn jewelry to cover his rent and avoid eviction. Since the video went viral, a GoFundMe campaign launched by Marie has raised more than $365,000 to help Donald and his wife stay in their home.
Donald explained in the video that his financial difficulties began after his landlord increased the rent, leaving him unable to keep up with bills. Caring for his wife, who has been diagnosed with dementia, has also placed a significant strain on his finances. Without children or immediate family to turn to, Donald feared losing their home and possibly having his wife placed in a care facility.
The heartwarming video, which has garnered over 4.6 million views, shows Marie surprising Donald with an envelope containing $1,300 raised by her and others. Donald, initially reluctant to accept the money, was moved to tears by the gesture. “You’re an angel in disguise, you really are,” he told Marie. He expressed his gratitude, calling it the best birthday present he could have received, as he turns 91 on August 25.
Marie’s GoFundMe campaign quickly surpassed its initial goal, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars from people touched by Donald’s story. The funds will help alleviate his financial burdens and ensure he can continue caring for his wife at home. Marie has also been working to find a more affordable rental for Donald within his budget.
