In Ukraine, a secretive special operations unit known as the 73rd Naval Center of Special Operations is leading a covert battle against Russia along the Dnipro River near the city of Kherson. The Ukrainian military’s liberation of the western bank of Kherson Oblast brought them within range of Russian positions across the river. The unit has been conducting riverine raids and reconnaissance missions, targeting Russian positions and disrupting their forces. Riverine operations require careful coordination between raiding and supporting elements to prevent friendly-fire incidents, but well-planned riverine raids are difficult to defend against. The 73rd Naval Center of Special Operations, structured similarly to a US Navy SEAL Team, may play a significant role in future large-scale fighting if Ukraine launches major attacks in the south.Â
