Satellite imagery reveals extensive damage in the Lebanese village of Aita al-Shaab following sustained Israeli airstrikes, highlighting the impact on one of Hezbollah’s key strongholds in southern Lebanon.
Satellite images from Planet Labs PBC show widespread destruction in Aita al-Shaab, with at least 64 sites, many containing multiple buildings, reduced to ruins. This village, a Hezbollah bastion, has been a frontline of conflict since the 2006 war with Israel. Recent hostilities have resulted in signifigant damage to buildings and farmland across southern Lebanon and northern Israel.
The conflict escalated when the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) struck Hezbollah military structures, including an air defense unit facility in Jabal Safi, approximately 21 kilometers from the Israeli border. Additional strikes targeted Hezbollah positions in Khiam, Odaisseh, and other areas in southern Lebanon.
In retaliation, Hezbollah launched around 40 rockets at northern Israel, causing property damage but no injuries. The IDF reported intercepting most of these rockets with the Iron Dome defense system. Subsequently, three drones crossed into Israeli airspace.
The confrontation intensified further with Hezbollah’s rocket barrage on the northern city of Safed and nearby communities. The IDF responded by targeting Hezbollah’s aerial unit in Jabal Safi, which had been used for launching surface-to-air missiles at Israeli aircraft. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for these attacks, citing retaliation for Israeli airstrikes that killed several of its operatives, including Ali al-Din, a member of its aerial forces.
