Lebanese Christian Official Killed, Sparking Sectarian Tensions

Pascal Sleiman, a coordinator for the Lebanese Forces party in the Byblos District of northern Lebanon, was abducted and subsequently killed on Sunday. This incident has raised alarms over potentially inflaming sectarian divisions within the nation. According to reports, Sleiman was taken by four armed individuals and later, the Lebanese Army disclosed that a Syrian gang was behind the kidnapping and murder. Efforts are being coordinated with Syrian authorities to return Sleiman’s body to Lebanon.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi have publicly condemned the killing, urging calm and wisdom among the citizens. The Lebanese Forces party, however, suspects the incident was a targeted political assassination, dismissing the initial robbery motive as inconsistent with the facts. In response, the party called for a strike in the Byblos District, signaling a day of mourning and protest against Sleiman’s abduction.

This event has provoked significant outrage among Sleiman’s supporters and other residents, leading to roadblocks, riots, and mob violence in the Byblos District. The situation reflects the broader context of Lebanon’s political landscape, marked by tensions between various factions, including the Lebanese Forces party and Hezbollah. The incident has also revived memories of past sectarian violence, including the 2021 violent clashes in Beirut and the suspicious death of another Lebanese Forces official last year, further complicating Lebanon’s ongoing struggles with political stability and sectarian harmony.

The Lebanese Forces party, a vocal critic of Hezbollah, perceives this act as an intimidation attempt to deter its pursuit of a peaceful and secure state for all Lebanese citizens. The party has vowed not to be dissuaded by such acts from continuing its mission. Amidst this backdrop, calls for justice for Sleiman and for preventing sectarian strife are growing louder, with several political parties and leaders condemning the kidnapping and killing, highlighting the precariousness of Lebanon’s sectarian and political dynamics.
