The Taliban’s Special Police Unit (GCPSU), associated with the Ministry of Interior, has conducted a notable military training session, showcasing a significant shift in the armament landscape in Afghanistan. The unit, photographed and shared on social media, was equipped with an array of advanced weaponry that traces back to US and NATO forces. Among the arsenal were DPMS Panther LRT-SASS sniper rifles, customized M4(A1) carbines, and Smith & Wesson SW9VE pistols, indicating a substantial acquisition of Western-made arms.

A previous report from the Defense Department revealed that over $7.1 billion in US-funded military assets were under the Afghan government’s control before its collapse, with a significant portion now presumed to be in Taliban hands. This includes more than 316,000 weapons, alongside ammunition and other military accessories, raising concerns over the implications for regional security and stability.
The Taliban has consistently photographed and shared images of their military units outfitted in US gear, and has also recently released video montages featuring specialized units.
