Two men, both US citizens, have been arrested for allegedly helping to set up a secret police station in New York City on behalf of the Chinese government. They were acting under the direction of a Chinese government official and have been charged with obstruction of an FBI investigation. About three dozen officers from China’s national police force were also charged with using social media to harass dissidents in the United States. This is part of the Justice Department’s efforts to disrupt Chinese government attempts to locate pro-democracy activists critical of Beijing’s policies and suppress their speech. Justice Department officials said these arrests were the first of their kind anywhere in the world.Â
