Due to the possibility that malware and monitoring software could be put on devices using open USB connections, the FBI has issued a warning against utilizing free public charging stations. 

The FBI has issued a warning to consumers about the use of free public charging stations, stating that criminals have found ways to use public USB ports to install malware and monitoring software on devices. The FBI advises that consumers carry their own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet instead. This warning is supported by the Federal Communications Commission, which has also issued guidance to avoid “juice jacking” since 2021. Devices that have been compromised with malware through USB cables can be hijacked, potentially leading to the theft of usernames and passwords. Although the bulletin did not cite any recent cases of consumer harm from juice jacking, it is still recommended to be cautious when using public charging stations.
